Golf stats for coaches: how to follow your students between lessons
Golf Stats App · Updated 13 October 2026 · 4 min read
A coach sees a student for an hour a week, if that; the rest of their golf happens on the course, without you. Round stats fill that gap: they tell you what really happened in competition and let you plan the lesson before the student arrives.
The problem: lessons start from a story
"How did the tournament go?" is how almost every post-event lesson begins. The answer is a story: the memorable shots, the three-putt on the last hole, the feeling that "the driver wasn't working". It's valuable information, but partial. Students remember episodes, not trends.
With data, the lesson starts from a different question: "Over your last eight rounds you lost a shot and a half per round on approaches from 110 to 140 yards: shall we work on that?".
What to look at in a student's stats
- Strokes Gained by category. It shows where the student loses most shots against a reference level. Choose a baseline close to their goal, not the Tour. For a refresher, see our Strokes Gained guide.
- Distance bands. "Approach" is too broad: the band where they lose most tells you which club and which shot to take to the range.
- Competition versus practice. Many students play well in practice rounds and poorly in events. Splitting the rounds shows straight away whether the issue is technical or about course management.
- The trend over time. The most useful number for both of you: if the area you worked on improves, the lesson worked, and the student sees it for themselves.
A simple workflow
- The student logs rounds shot by shot in the app, in about 10 minutes a round.
- You see them before the lesson: stats, Strokes Gained and category breakdowns, without having to ask.
- The lesson focuses on the area that costs the most, with a measurable target.
- After a few weeks you compare the new rounds with the old ones.
The hardest step is the first: getting students to log rounds. That's why entry has to be quick. If it takes half an hour per round, they stop after three events.

How it works in Golf Stats App
For coaches, Golf Stats App is free, with unlimited students. It's not a trial: it's a choice, because a coach who uses the app brings their students with them.
- Connect students with an invite or by letting them scan your QR code: from then on you see their rounds and stats.
- See the Strokes Gained of every student round, by category, distance and club, when the student has Premium or has unlocked that round.
- Organise your work: a lesson schedule, notes on each student and a dashboard showing who has played recently.
- Play with the same account and keep your own stats too.
The app is available in English, Italian and German, and more than 22,000 courses are already in the database, so your students will almost always find theirs.
Questions coaches often ask
"My students don't want to waste time on their phone"
That's why entry only asks where they played from, the distance and the club. It can be done at the end of the day, calmly, in about 10 minutes.
"Does it work with juniors?"
Yes, and it's often with younger players that data works best: seeing the number go up after a month of work on one area is real motivation.
"Do I have to change my method?"
No. Data doesn't replace a coach's eye: it tells it where to look. The technique is still yours to teach.
